How Traditional Cable Operators Are Competing With Amazon and Netflix: TheStreet

Published on 8 Jun 2016
While television viewing habits are changing, especially amid the rise of streaming outlets like Netflix and Amazon Prime, people will likely consume more video than ever before in the coming years, according to one expert. 'We are in a battle for people's time and attention,' said Russell Sapienza, entertainment & media advisory practice partner at PwC, which released a five-year outlook report on the entertainment and media space on Wednesday. 'We see that as one of the shifts occurring over these five years.' He said the major traditional cable providers - from companies like Comcast , Charter Communications , Verizon Communications and Cablevision - are working on 'streaming only' options in an effort to compete with the aforementioned streaming giants. 'There are about 10 million households with a broadband line coming into the home with no television,' he said, adding that these households represent an important opportunity for TV and video providers. Sapienza doesn't see much of a battle between the old players and the new players, like Netflix and Amazon. 'I think everyone will prevail,' he said, adding 'I think you will have this traditional linear option that tends to be shrinking, but not very fast. And you have a demographic of youth who are consuming media at different times on different devices and there are players out there offering TV everywhere.' In order to grow, Sapienza found that cable and streaming companies must tap into overseas markets, many of which are buoyed by a growing middle class and higher disposable income. 'We used to monitor about 30 countries and we are now monitoring 54 where media is taking hold,' he added. PwC said total U.S. TV and video revenue will reach $122.09 billion in 2020, compared to $119.77 billion in 2015. The number of U.S. pay-TV subscribers will reach 101 million in 2020, from 100 million in 2015. TheStreet's Scott Gamm reports from Wall Street.

Horizonte Minerals Plc (LON:HZM) chief hails environmental licence as a “major milestone” ProactiveInvestors Stocktube

Published on 8 Jun 2016
Jeremy Martin, chief executive of Horizonte Minerals Plc, (LON:HZM, TSX:HZM) says the preliminary environmental licence it has been granted for a mine and beneficiation plant at Araguaia in Brazil is “a major milestone for us”.

He tells Proactive Investors that the licence “is probably the hardest milestone to get” adding “it’s basically the first stage gate in terms of walking towards production”.

The junior miner said the award underscored the viability of its project at Araguaia and the state government’s support for the development.

“We are currently operating in a very low nickel price environment and the key that everybody wants to see is ‘can you operate and make money at this kind of price range’ and our aim is to show that this project can,” Martin says.

The WTI Crude Oil market broke higher during the course of the session on Tuesday, clearing the $50 level. By closing at the top of the range, it looks like the market should continue to go higher. After all, the $50 level is of course a large, round, psychologically significant barrier. Also, is an area that we have been fighting with for some time, and with that being the case I believe that it’s a sign we will continue to go much higher.

#Finland - The Thief Next Door: Russia's rich history of annexing neighbouring countries: UKRAINE TODAY

Published on 7 Jun 2016
Finland... the thought of Vladimir Putin doesn't quite come to mind at the first mention of it. But, a small Finnish autonomy, the Aland islands is living under the vast shadow of the Kremlin.

The trip begins at a central bus station. Although it may sound warm and exotic the actual climate here is damp and cold. Aland - nearly seven thousand rocky islands, a region that encompasses an archipelago at the entrance of the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. Just like Ukraine's Crimea, Aland is an autonomous region and although nowadays it is the only Swedish-speaking region in Finland... Aland islands were under the rule of the Russian Empire. And seemingly, Russia's interest in the Finnish autonomy has not faded yet.

So what's it like for the Finns to live right beside a neighbour that stole a part of their land? From a Ukrainian standpoint that sounds way-too-familiar.

The Kremlin grip on the neighbouring ex-Soviet states is evident, but it's not that easy to spot in Finland, at least not with a naked eye.

The phenomena of cross-border shopping. It is a part of the Finland/Russia frontier too. The Russian language can be heard everywhere here. Special buses bring shoppers here several times a day.

#Iraq - Fighting the IS with Iraq’s Golden Division: The Road to Fallujah: VICE News

Published on 7 Jun 2016
In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives.

The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor.

Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time.

But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.

VICE News embedded with Iraq’s Golden Division Special Forces unit as they fought their way into the villages surrounding the city of Hit, where they encountered ambushes, sniper fire, and tried to sort suspected Islamic State operatives and sympathizers from innocent Iraqi civilians.
